Culture and health shared with Under 8’s

THE IWC North Burnett team was once again delighted to be invited to the Gayndah State School to participate in the Under 8”s Day. IWC shared traditional Aboriginal culture as well as health and wellbeing information with students at the school on 23 May.

Fruit bingo delivered by the team was a big hit, as were the oranges donated to IWC by local citrus grower Sweetie Orchards for the event, meaning the children not only learned about fruit but enjoyed delicious local produce as well.

Under 8’s Day is an event where children and adults come together at Gayndah State School, and IWC is proud to be part of it. The theme of this year’s Under 8’s Week delivered by Early Childhood Australia across the nation, is ‘Children exploring language and culture’, and the IWC helped the school to deliver both.”

The IWC North Burnett team provided a game that involved matching Wakka Wakka language with both wildlife and parts of the body. Team members also served up homemade traditional damper with golden syrup.

The IWC North Burnett Indigenous Health Practitioners are able to share culture while delivering the health and wellbeing services for all people in the community, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous. This is part of the way we deliver Reconciliation in Action every day.

Gayndah State School included a Biggest Morning Tea event as part of the day to raise money for the Cancer Council, with everyone donating when they enjoyed a coffee or tea and delicious homemade cakes, slices and sandwiches.

Everyone agreed that Eve Cocking, who had started cooking at 4am, had outdone herself this year. Deb Ulcoq and her team of organisers did a great job again this year, and IWC’s North Burnett Team looks forward to an invitation to join the event next year.

The event included other participants and services, as well as a bouncy castle and petting zoo with small animals.
