IWC Dietetics and Diabetes Education duo in North Burnett
REGULAR one-on-one IWC Diabetes Education and Dietetics sessions, including home visits, are being delivered on the ground in North Burnett throughout 2019.
“IWC is committed to building health and wellbeing in the North Burnett community, and offering individual sessions by Accredited Practising Dietitian Natalie Selever and Diabetes Educator Kym Connolly are part of this,” said IWC North Burnett Manager Jenni Toogood.
“Natalie is available every two months and Kym, who is the new face of IWC Diabetes Education, will be here monthly.”
IWC is non-government, Aboriginal community-run and charitable. It offers a range of health and wellbeing services to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the community.
Born and raised in a rural area of Alice Springs, Kym is delighted to join the IWC North Burnett team regularly at their Gayndah clinic.
“I am interested in anything relating to Diabetes, but my greatest focus is on understanding why the body stores rather than burns fat so my specialty is type 2 diabetes, obesity and insulin resistance,” she said.
“I look forward to a year in which I can forge strong relationships with IWC clients to help them address their Diabetes. I am open to questions, and here to offer solutions based on individual needs.”
The IWC North Burnett team includes Indigenous Health Practitioners who are working with both Kym and Natalie.
Jenni said: “IWC provides a holistic model of whole-of-person care, and the delivery of on-the-ground one-on-one Dietetics and Diabetes Education services is a valuable addition to our communities. Everyone is welcome – IWC is here for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, without discrimination.”
“Natalie and Kym are both holding regular clinics based in Gayndah, which include home visits as required. IWC will, of course, provide transport to the clinics from right across the North Burnett, to support people in our community in accessing this new service.”
Natalie has worked in a range of clinical areas of Dietetics, including renal nutrition, diabetes, weight management, gastrointestinal issues, malnutrition and general healthy eating. She is committed to early intervention and prevention, as well as treating existing conditions.
“I am experienced in helping people around management and prevention of a range of nutrition-related conditions, in particular diabetes, diverticulosis and high cholesterol. I can assist people who are considering weight loss surgery, in both the pre- and post-bariatric stages,” said Natalie.
